Women's Day: conquest of freedom

On March 8, many countries around the world celebrate Women's Day. The date was made official by the United Nations (UN) in 1975, after years of protests and demonstrations for equal rights
.

In other words, unlike many commemorative dates, women's day did not come about with commerce, even though it has become common to give gifts to women on that date.

More than celebrating the life and existence of women in a generic way, the date serves to remember those who fought in the past and to reaffirm the current struggle for social, labor and political rights.

The increase of women in the leadership of companies and the number of women who support their homes are clear examples of why we should celebrate March 8 without forgetting the struggles of the past that contributed - a lot! — for our freedom.

Stay with us to learn much more about Women's Day and the impacts that protests and demonstrations have on building women's empowerment.

Origin of International Women's Day

You already know that the date, March 8, was chosen by the UN in 1975. But since the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, many demonstrations in favor of women's rights have already taken place in several countries, especially European ones

.

During the Second International Conference of Socialist Women in Germany in 1910, a date was chosen for annual demonstrations. In other words, every year, on that same date, women from different countries would organize themselves in strikes and protests for rights and improvements at work.

The first Women's Day was on March 19, 1911. As planned, many women demonstrated around the world not only that day but in the days that followed as well.

In the

United States, however, 125 women were killed and burned in a textile factory under orders from the bosses on March 25 of that same year. They asked for the right to maternity leave and reduced working hours

.

Although these events took place in March, the UN's choice to make International Women's Day official on the eighth day of the month was a reference to a women's march in Russia in 1917, which contributed to the end of the country's tsarism.

Women as heads of the family

Brazil is one of the countries that developed based on patriarchy. That is, with the idea that it is the man who must support and represent the family before society. The woman had the role of staying at home and taking care of the education of her children, being supported by
her husband.

For this reason, until recently, the idea of a woman supporting her household was always linked to solo mothers, who could not count on a partner.

But according to the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), the number of women with spouses who assume the role of head of household has grown a lot.

For example, in 2001, only 1 million women with spouses were responsible for providing for the household; but in 2015, the number increased to 6.8 million.

Women in leadership positions According to the results of

the last Annual Social Information Report (RAIS), the number of women holding management and board positions in companies went from 32.3% and 32.9%, respectively, in 2003, to 38.2% and 42.2%, in
2017.

In addition to this indicator, research conducted by the Great Place to Work Institute, which evaluates the best companies to work for, shows that, among the 150 best companies to work for in Brazil, the number of women in leadership positions increased from 11% to 42% from 1997 to 2018. This demonstrates the empowerment of women to gain space in the labor market and choose what they want for their future.
